Principal’s Message
Hello PLES Families,
Just a few messages from the school:
• Today we had our Red Dress Assembly with a guest Terry MacNeil, from HRCE Mi’kmaq Services, who shared knowledge in an age appropriate manner about MMIWG and the significance of Red Dress Day. One of our students, Kasey Oakes, Jingle dress danced at the assemblies. This is a healing dance which fit perfectly into the morning’s message. Red Dress Day – May 5 Our school will be recognizing Red Dress Day, a Canada‑wide day of awareness and remembrance for Indigenous women, girls, and Two‑Spirit people who are missing. Learning will be age‑appropriate and focused on empathy, care, and respect. Younger students will explore these ideas, while older students will learn about the symbolic meaning of red dresses and the importance of community care. Staff and students are encouraged to wear RED on Tuesday.
• Spring weather reminder: With spring comes mud! Having a change of clothes and a pair of indoor shoes at school is very helpful.
• Water bottles: Please remember to send your child to school each day with a water bottle. We no longer providing disposable cups from the office.
•May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and throughout the month the school community has already started engaging in a variety of activities to support student wellbeing. The school counsellor will be visiting classrooms over the next 6 weeks to lead age-appropriate discussions and presentations focused on building important social-emotional skills, including setting healthy boundaries, resolving conflicts, and learning how to match reactions to the size of the problem using self-regulation strategies. Students will have opportunities to practice these skills through interactive lessons and activities designed to promote resilience, empathy, and positive relationships. The school looks forward to a meaningful month of learning and growth together.
Thank you for your continued support. Have a great week.
